中学校では四年に一度教科書が改訂されます。今年度はその年にあたり、憂き目に合っています。下記の文章は、中学校三年生の英語の教科書『NEW HORIZON』東京書籍 （29頁）に、今年度 はじめてお目見えした文章です。

アマゾン川や熱帯雨林の恩恵と環境問題

①How has the Amazon been helpful to us ?

1.The Amazon’s water power produces about eighty percent of Brazil’s electricity.

2.The rain forest around the Amazon produces about twenty percent of the world’s oxygen.

②  What is happening around the Amazon now ?

1.People are destroying the rain forest. An area almost twice the size of Japan disappeared between the 1970s and 2010.

2.It is a big problem for the unique animals of the Amazon,and also for everyone on the Earth.

中学生の教科書とはいえ、侮れない文章に出会うことがあります。意表をつかれ、あわてます。

何事であれ、
ブラジルでは驚ろいたり
感嘆したりするとき、
「オーパ！」という。

開高健先生の、『オーパ！』集英社文庫 の一文です。

追記：
アマゾン川は世界一 流域面積の大きな川です、とは誰しもが覚える受験知識ですが、その河口の川幅は、300Km、東京・名古屋間に相当する距離です。河口にあるマラジョーという島は九州よりも大きいそうです、と説明を加えると、子どもたちは皆驚きの表情を見せます。
